Georg Pichl, born in Vienna in 1965, lives and works in Vienna’s Neubau district. He paints and writes; as a poet, he publishes under the pen name Georg Harlekin.

Georg Pichl has been writing and painting since 1990 and has been painting abstractly since March 2020. The acrylic paintings on canvas shown here were created between 2020 and 2024. The graphic works are drawings in pencil and felt-tip pen on paper from the years 2009 to 2019, photographed and digitally reworked; they are offered as prints.

As Georg Harlekin, he self-published the poetry collections “Briefe an die Liebe, Teil 1” (Letters to Love, Part 1; 2015) and “Teil 2” (Part 2; 2019). Between 2013 and 2020, he gave readings in Vienna at venues including the Neubau District Museum, the main hall of the Döbling Music School, and galleries.

Origins and Encounters

My heart belongs to nature and to painting. I draw inspiration from dance and travel. Even as a child, I had a certain inkling that there was something inside me that wanted to be expressed. Fortunately, I was born into a family of artists and grew up in the studio.

In my youth, I had the privilege of spending time, mostly on weekends, with my father, Peter Pichl, at the home of the Heimo Kuchling family. Heimo Kuchling’s wife, Ursula (daughter of Werner Berg), was something like a second mother to me. In Heimo Kuchling’s studio, I was allowed to be present at various gatherings of artists, where discussions took place with Maria Lassnig, Josef Pillhofer, Joannis Avramidis, Eric Ess, Peter Pichl, Ulrich Auinger, Otto Jungwirth, Johannes Georg Gsteu, and several others. Together with the artists’ children, we went outside to play in the garden. For me, an unforgettable and remarkable time.
